Darcy's Story

When retirement finally arrived, Darcy O'Mara and her husband, Tom, imagined spending their days traveling, enjoying the outdoors, and making memories with their grandchildren. Instead, a back injury left Darcy sidelined by constant pain and wondering if the life they had planned would ever return.

‍

What began as an ordinary day outdoors quickly became a challenge that affected nearly every aspect of Darcy's life.

‍

A Simple Misstep Changes Everything

‍

An avid outdoors enthusiast, Darcy was fly fishing when a seemingly minor slip changed the course of her life.

‍

As she climbed a muddy bank, her foot became stuck, causing her to twist awkwardly. What felt like a small injury turned out to be a herniated lumbar disc that led to severe sciatica and radiating leg pain. What followed was months of worsening symptoms that made even simple daily activities difficult.

‍

"I stopped going to the gym and Pilates. I could barely even walk anymore," Darcy recalled. "The mornings were terrible."

When Pain Takes Over

‍

Despite trying physical therapy, steroid injections, and medication, Darcy's condition continued to worsen. The pain became so severe that some mornings Tom had to help her get out of bed. Travel plans were canceled, favorite activities were put on hold, and time with family became increasingly difficult.

‍

"We do everything together, and I had never seen her like this," Tom said. "Being in chronic pain wears on you emotionally, too."

‍

After multiple MRI scans, Darcy was told that a traditional spinal fusion and discectomy might be her best option. Concerned about the invasiveness of the procedure and the lengthy recovery often associated with open surgery, she hesitated.

‍

Discovering Another Option

‍

Searching for answers, Tom reached out to a trusted contact who introduced them to the possibility of endoscopic spine surgery, an ultra-minimally invasive approach that can help treat certain spinal conditions through very small incisions.

‍

The couple traveled from Michigan to Florida to meet Patrick Y. Kim, MD, who determined Darcy was a candidate for the procedure. Imaging revealed that her disc herniation was not only large but also calcified, making treatment more challenging. Even so, Dr. Kim believed endoscopic surgery offered the best path forward.

‍

A Life-Changing Procedure

‍

Darcy underwent outpatient endoscopic spine surgery and awoke to an unexpected realization.

‍

The pain that had dominated her life was gone.

‍

"There was no pain. I couldn't believe it," she said.

‍

The following day, Darcy and Tom went to the beach. Friends who saw her shortly after surgery were amazed by the difference.

‍

"They said, 'You've got the sparkle back in your eyes,'" Tom recalled.

‍

Looking Forward Again

‍

Today, Darcy is back to enjoying the activities she loves. She can spend time with her grandchildren, stay active, and embrace the retirement she and Tom had always envisioned. Most importantly, she is no longer defined by chronic pain.

‍

"I feel great and have had no more pain," Darcy said. "I didn't realize how much of life I was missing. I am so grateful to be able to live my life to the fullest again."
